Department of Sociology and Social Work

The Department of Sociology and Social Work at Girijananda Chowdhury University admits students to its programmes of studies, which include Undergraduate and Post- Graduate programmes, from across the state and the country, at large. From the changing nature of work to the emergence of new digital technologies, and from a critical analysis of existing contemporary socio-economic inequalities to the dynamics of social strata, the department conducts extensive study on Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Minorities, Sociology of Health, Sociology of Development, Economic Sociology, Social Anthropology, Environmental Sociology, Criminology, and Population Studies. Furthermore, equal emphasis is given by the department in the study of pressing social issues such as gender, race and health inequality, labour market disadvantage within and across generations, as well as the issues of sociological significance in North-Eastern India. With a team of skillful and scholarly faculty members, the department aspires to create a cogitative community of young minds, resourceful scholars, administrators, professionals, social and political activists who are thoroughly equipped to meet and overcome the challenges posed by the rapidly changing world societies of the contemporary epoch.
