Vision Statement :

To create global citizens by fostering academic excellence and a supportive environment that nurtures the aesthetics of the English literature and language.

Mission Statement:

M1: To develop a holistic understanding of the English literature and languageencouraging students to explore their creativity and critical thinking.

M2: To impart education beyond the classroom using contemporary pedagogical activities—such as, Readers Theatre, Storyboard, Interactive fiction (IF), film screenings, extension activitieswith other institutions, educational tours—making academics an intellectual and passionate engagement.

M3: To use an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to knowledge—with an emphasis on race, class, caste, gender and sexuality, marginality, identity, politics, hegemony, and so on—students would be encouraged to create, analyse and express themselves in ways that enhance their sense of community within the human, social and natural environment.

M4: To build confidence, leadership qualities, a sense of responsibility, value and ethics in students by providingthem with a conducive environment for their academic, physical and spiritual development.

About the department:

The Department of English at the Girijananda Chowdhury University is committed to questioning and reformulating the basic principles of literary study. Our coverage of chronological fields extends from the medieval era to the twenty-first century, and includes a wide variety of subfields, media, and genres, including language and linguistics, English language teaching, theatre, cinema, and visual culture, poetry and poetics, fiction and nonfiction, gender and race studies, literary and culture theory, global Anglophone writing, post human studies, psychoanalysis, ecocriticism, among others. Ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate programs, the department offers its students the opportunity to develop their talents in poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and digital media, as well as to participate in different programs of readings and workshops with visiting writers. With a vibrant team of faculty, research centers, language labs, and a culture of collaboration, we aspire to invent new ways to delve into humanities research and creative-critical work, while fostering dialogue, civic engagement, and social justice.

Language Laboratory

The Language Laboratory in GCU empowers better management of language classes and renders unlimited opportunities to the students to enhance their language skills. The lab is equipped with 20 computers and headsets where students can work on pre programmed language activities designed by Orell Digital Language Lab software.

The four essential language skills, i.e. listening, speaking, reading, writing are systematically put to work in tandem with  more than 3000 activities that are designed to support learners in the process of acquiring communication skill sets quickly. Moreover, the students can also prepare for interviews, group discussions, and formal presentations as well as for TOEFL, GRE and IELTS examinations.
